Design of Heydar Aliyev Center

Zaha Hadid Architects was designated as the design architect of Haydar Aliyev Center after the competition held in 2007. Designed as the priority building for the cultural programs of the nation by the famous Iraqi and British architect Zaha Hadid. The Cultural Center, built on an area of 57,000 square meters. One of the most critical but challenging elements of the project was the development of the outer shell of the building in terms of architecture. We wanted to develop such a seamless surface that it looks homogeneous, combines a wide range of different functions, construction logics and technical systems, and integrates with the exterior of the building. Advanced computer techniques have allowed continuous control and communication of this complexity among numerous project workers.

Purpose of the Center

The center aims to express the sensitivities of Azeri culture and the optimism of a future-looking nation, by abandoning the strict and often monumental Soviet architecture, which is quite common in Baku.

The cultural center took its name from Haydar Aliyev, who led Azerbaijan between 1969-2003 and was opened with the participation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. At the centre, studies on the investigation and promotion of Heydar Aliyev’s heritage.
